The coming to consciousness about what we wear on our bodies is being driven along by many factors – including popular culture icons engaging their profile and influence for greater good.
Pharrell Williams, of ‘Happy’ fame, is one such musician involved in a fashion initiative that is turning plastic and ocean waste into desirable clothing under the G-Star RAW for the Oceans collection launching this month. Read more in this 1 Million Women article by Bronte Hogarth.
Another popular musician Will.i.am is stepping out too, in sharply tailored suits made by Coca-Cola funded reuse initiative Ekocycle with fabric created from recycled plastic bottles, as reported by Ecouterre magazine and in the video below.
Another way of being ethical and sustainable about your clothing footprint is to reuse and repurpose clothing that already exists in our own and others wardrobes. My particular interest is natural fibres and found stuff, so this Emanuel linen coat dress appeals to those values. All I needed do for the beautiful vintage linen garment was hand wash it and leave to hang. The spectacular op-shop-found cowrie shell pendant necklace needed a little TLC, and I did this by threading through a fire wire to help secure the pendant piece to the necklace. Beautiful treasure from the ocean, mended and valued for what it is – irreplaceable.
