The Power of Bones is the incredible story of Keelen Mailman’s life journey to date and it was a privilege to be on country at Mt Tabor for the book launch at sunset last night. Mt Tabor is a long way from the coast and about two hours from Augathella in western Queensland, but Georgie Somerset and I made the trek because we are so proud of Keelen as a fellow of the Australian Rural Leadership Program.
Keelen and I were Spiritual Travellers in the Kimberley and it was from her I learned about leading from the heart and trusting your instincts.
As the first Aboriginal women to run a cattle station in Australia, Keelen has shown incredible courage and love for her Bidjara ancestors, culture and country. I will write more on this tomorrow.
For now, here’s Sew 122, obviously an upcycle I planned ahead of time. It’s a pink pigskin jacket from a op-shop, from which I cut off the cuffs so it fitted better. I used one cuff to make a phone pouch by sewing the cut edge together and leaving the finished edge as the top, which is slung from an opshop necklace of matching tones. The black top is op shop silk and the skirt one I made from viscose lycra. I wore this outfit at a 612 ABC Swap It session back in 2012, and upcycled the bag as the new addition for Sew 122.
I am an avid recycler and I love to read your articles. I’ve been recycling since childhood, but now I am more feverish about it and churn through loads of oshop clothing to give it all a second life, and to take on the challenge of this type of creativity. It is empowering and so exciting to dream up the possibilities for each discarded piece. I loath store bought clothing, it is cheap nasty and unethical. keep up your great works

Hi Liz … wonderful to hear from you. We are having a feverish moment at Pandora Gallery (Coolah NSW) at the moment sorting old buttons from Jennie’s grandmother’s collection! And yes, it is so empowering and exciting to upcycle waste clothing. Feel free to email me a photo of your favourite upcycle … love seeing what others are doing. j
